The Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo and Stratford Perth is hoping to rehome several dogs that were abandoned in Mitchell last month.
On March 23, there were reports of dogs running loose around the town. Animal services secured four, and four more were dropped off during the following week.
“We suspect all eight dogs are from the same household as many have similar features and are roughly the same age. All the dogs came in with dirty coats, some had matted fur, one was suffering from an ear infection, another needed a dental cleaning, and all suffered from varying levels of being underweight,” said Amber Gaynor, Stratford Perth animal center manager.
OPP is investigating who abandoned the animals. Anyone with information on the perpetrators is asked to contact the police at 519-348-9700.
“We are urgent people not to abandon their pets. We exist to support people and their furry family members in times of crisis and always encourage people to call us to discuss how we might be able to support them, whether through our pet pantry program, low-cost spay neuter services, training opportunities or surrender services,” said Calla James, director, community engagement & outreach.
As for the pooches, one is still under medical care, but the other seven are now eligible for adoption. Three have found a new home and four others are waiting.

Humane society staff ask that you consider adoption, as they have 50 dogs available between both centers.
