Pet pantries, food banks see growing demand amid ‘difficult time’ for pet owners

Gino, 27/06/202326/03/2024
Denise Angus has operated a pet rescue center and food bank for the last seven years, but she has never seen such a “remarkable increase in demand” for the services the center provides. Angus, the founder of Mattie’s Place, says the need for help to feed pets has been soared in recent years. The center has gone from feeding 500 to 600 pets per month before the COVID-19 pandemic to about 1,200 per month. “The need is so huge, I’ve never seen anything like it in all the years I’ve been doing this,” Angus told CBC Toronto. “It’s a really…

Gino, 26/06/202326/03/2024
Not only was the weather ideal for Saturday’s Steps for Pets Walkathon in Morden, but it also drew a record number of registrants. One of the biggest fundraisers of the year for the Pembina Valley Humane Society, the Walkathon drew over 60 individual registrants. “I can say for sure that this has been a record-breaking year when it comes to registrants for the Steps for Pets Walkathon,” said the PVHS’s Holly Thorne. “And we’ve been doing this for a long time, but we’ve never had this many individual registrants. We had over 60 of them this year, and they all…

Sask. Indigenous woman creates Pet Treaty Cards

Gino, 25/06/202326/03/2024
It was on a drive with her sister that Joaney Starblanket got the idea that changed her life for the better, a little over a month ago. Starblanket said her sister thought it would be funny if pets had their own treaty cards. “I thought to myself, why not,” she told CTV News. That “why not” then became a few quick edits on Canva, then a template, then one for her own cat, ‘Goober,’ and Starblanket said it blew her sister away during their next visit. She shared it with her coworkers in Yorkton, who told her that she had…

Should you take pet snakes to sunbathe in the park?

Gino, 22/06/202326/03/2024
A man has been spotted sunbathing with 20 of his snakes in a local park, setting off a debate among internet users about which pets are appropriate, and which aren’t, for public spaces. The Friends of Barshaw Park Facebook group said it had been contacted by several people “with concerns about someone bringing snakes into the park”, which is in Paisley, Scotland. A post read: “It has been reported that recently 20 snakes were brought in by the person. “Renfrewshire Council has told us that no-one has permission to bring snakes into Barshaw Park. The police request that if you…

Pet owners warned of dangerous yet common household item

Gino, 20/06/202326/03/2024
Following her usual morning routine, Chrissy Villarreal kissed her dog Petey goodbye as she left for work. It was the last time he would do so. And it was all because of a preventable accident. Vets are warning too many furry friends are getting their paws on the common and seemingly harmless household item of empty snack bags, often with tragic outcomes. The caution comes after Ms Villarreal shared the heartbreak of losing her “baby boy” to the hazard. In a Facebook post, Ms Villarreal said she could not wrap her head around what happened to Petey. Opinion: Think humans’ treatment of animals has improved in 50 years? think again

Gino, 07/06/202326/03/2024
Fifty years ago, my first article arguing that it is wrong to treat animals as we did appeared in the New York Review of Books. Two years later my book “Animal Liberation” was published, after which it is credited with triggering the modern animal rights movement. Similar ethical perspectives are now supported by many philosophers. But the factual descriptions in that book of what we do to animals have long ceased to capture current conditions accurately. In updating the book, I could not avoid the question: Have we made progress in our attitudes toward animals and our treatment of them…
